Three taximen ambushed in three consecutive days

From Friday, February 14, to Sunday, February 16, three men in the taxi industry died in separate incidents, after being sprayed with bullets.

Two men, a taxi marshal and a taxi owner, were shot dead on separate days at the Actonville Hostel, while another taxi owner was shot dead in his vehicle, in Emandleni.

Police spokesman Capt Mack Mngomezulu said a queue marshal was sitting in the kitchen at around 9.30pm, on Friday, when unknown man fired several shots at him.

“The 35-year-old died instantly and seven spent cartridges were found on the scene,” said Mngomezulu.

The next death was that of a 45-year-old taxi driver, who died in Emandleni, on Saturday night, after being shot twice in the head.

“He was found dead on the driver’s seat and it seems that the people who shot him had boarded his taxi,” said Mngomezulu.

The Sunday night death also took place in the kitchen at the hostel, and involved a 48-year-old taxi owner.

“Seven spent cartridges and several projectiles were found on the scene and the man had been shot several times,” said Mngomezulu.

He said the motive for the shooting is unknown as the taxi association said there is no known war going on.

Mngomezulu added that though they can’t confirm it they believe the deaths are connected.

All the men were shot with a pistol.

No one has been arrested and the police are investigating.
