Unlocking hope for Babies behind Bars
The Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora recently collected and donated a carload of goodies to public benefit organisation and non-profit organisation, Babies behind Bars, that is based in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
The group operates in all correctional centres which house mothers and children across the country, as well as in Namibia and Swaziland.
Romy Titus, the founder and director, started the charity in 2007.
Their main purpose is to care for children from birth to two years, who are born and live in jail with their incarcerated mothers.
The children, who by law have to leave at the age of two years, are subjected to a rather harsh life behind bars.
Their basic human needs such as proper nutrition, clothing, diapers, blankets, toys, bottles and toiletries are often not readily available, and the organisation has taken the responsibility to ensure that while the babies are behind bars, they are well cared for.
The organisers of Babies behind Bars are passionate about little people and believe that every child has the right to be properly cared for and this is the reason why Babies behind Bars was born.
The organisation’s main objective is. as their motto states: “Unlocking Hope”.
