A man believed to be in his mid-20s has been arrested, together with the brother of the victim, who is a minor.
The incident occurred on February 24.
Benoni Police Station commander Brig Poobalan Subbiah said the man offered the victim’s brother R10 to allow him to sleep with the girl.
“He has been charged with statutory rape and the victim’s brother will be charged under the Sexual Offences Act,” said Subbiah.
He said the minor’s charge will be decided by the court, when the two appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court, soon.
Although no one was shot, members of the public said they had heard at least three shots being fired during the arrest of the man, but Subbiah said he had no knowledge of it.
