Eight Rotarians earn prestigious awards
The Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora held its annual Paul Harris Fellowship Awards Evening, on Wednesday, February 26, at the Benoni Country Club.
This is one of Rotary’s most prestigious events, during which individuals are honoured for going the extra mile in making a difference in the lives of those in need, through community service.
Four Paul Harris Fellowship- and four Paul Harris Sapphire Awards, which entail being awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship Award for the second time, were handed to deserving Rotarians.
The recipients of this year’s awards were:
- Butch Wilson (charter member; Paul Harris Sapphire Award), for his commitment and dedication to Rotary, his vision to develop a leadership programme and encouraging younger members to take up leadership positions in Rotary
- Joe Araujo (Paul Harris Sapphire Award), for his contribution to various charities and his ability to identify viable projects, and assisting charities with his wealth of knowledge gained from Girls and Boys Town on all levels of running an NGO.
- Gwyn Westcott (Paul Harris Sapphire Award), for her involvement with soup kitchens for the past 11 years in Geluksdal, Etwatwa and Actonville areas and more recently her involvement in establishing the Library at Tskane School.
- Alfie Moffatt (charter member; Paul Harris Sapphire Award) and Gale Moffatt (Paul Harris Fellowship Award), for their contribution to the Youth Exchange programme and their involvement helping blind/visually impaired people in swimming and bowls.
- Joan Lithgow (Paul Harris Fellowship Award), Joan Lithgow for her contribution to enhance/improve education through the use of marimbas.
- Mary Zanker and Heather Griffin (Paul Harris Fellowship Awards), for their dedication and work for the past 11 years at Nora’s Educare Centre.
Each award was humbly accepted by recipients, after which fellowship was enjoyed.
