Police recovered two rifles, a shotgun and ammunition during a raid on a property in Barcelona, Etwatwa, on August 6.

According to Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, members of the Etwatwa Police Station acted on information about illegal firearms being kept at a room in Lekgolo Street at about 10:41.

When officers arrived at the address, the occupant of the room was not there. Police nevertheless searched the premises, where they recovered an AK-47 rifle with five rounds of ammunition, an R1 rifle and a shotgun with 26 rounds of ammunition.

The firearms and ammunition were confiscated and booked into the SAPS exhibit store for further investigation.

Police have opened an inquiry docket and are investigating to identify and trace the owner of the room.

Acting Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Brigadier Mbongeni Ngcobo commended the Etwatwa SAPS members for their swift response, saying their actions resulted in the recovery of the illegal firearms and ammunition.

Police investigations are continuing.
