Police investigate severe attack on elderly woman

The Actonville police have arrested a man following the severe beating of an elderly woman during a robbery at her flat.

According to concerned resident Chivani Ramdaw, a number of youngsters attacked Shaida Motilal on the night of March 8.

The youngsters stole an undisclosed amount of cash and a DVD player, after ransacking the flat.

Ramdaw said the person who witnessed the incident was going down the stairs when he saw youngsters running out of Motilal’s flat.

“When he got to the victim’s door he found her in a bad state.

“He then alerted the people of the flat,” said Ramdaw.

“Police were also called to the scene and, according to family members, friends and residents of the flats, they displayed an insensitive attitude and also a lack of concern.”

However, Actonville police spokesperson Capt Mack Mngomezulu said the fact that the police arrested a suspect is proof that they did their job.

“The police called an ambulance after arriving at the scene,” added Mngomezulu.

“We have arrested one suspect and charged him with common robbery.”

He said there was no forced entry at the flats.
