On Friday, March 21, property owners awakened to find that their house had been broken into and that several items, including laptops, a plasma TV, cellphones, jewellery and bedding, were missing.
They reported the matter to the police.
“The Benoni SAPS detectives, while on patrol duty in town, in the morning, spotted a suspicious-looking Quantum taxi with five occupants in Tom Jones Street, and followed it,” said police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.
The Quantum occupants suspected that they were being followed and drove towards the N12 Highway, where they headed in the direction of Daveyton.
“The police followed and stopped the vehicle on the highway,” said Sekele.
They searched the taxi and found the stolen items.
The men then confessed to having broken into a house in Alphen Park at around 1am the same morning and also told the police that they had already sold some of the items.
“They took the police to the two people who had bought the items and they were also arrested,” said Sekele.
Sekele said two of the suspects were previously wanted for housebreaking cases.
The seven are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court soon, to face charges of housebreaking and possession of stolen property.
