Still no improvement to Actonville cemetery

Clean-up work is yet to be conducted at the Styx Road Cemetery, in Actonville.

Acting spokesman for Ekurhuleni Lebogang Ramashala said the contractor who was appointed in February was supposed to start work on March 3.

However, the contractor failed to perform according to bid specifications, which has delayed maintenance work.

”Due to the contractor’s non-performance, correct processes had to be followed, due to contractual obligations between the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and the service provider,” said Ramashala.

”Unfortunately, a cemetery like Styx has no personnel to render the service, hence the maintenance has been out-sourced.”

The City Times reported on the state of the cemetery on March 13.

Many trees, shrubs and weeds are still growing from the graves and concealing many of the tombstones.

Ramashala said maintenance would include cutting grass, picking up litter, road sweeping and pruning of trees.

She could not indicate when the work would commence.
