Women inspired to love themselves at high tea
As part of their mission to strengthen and inspire women, iThemba Support Centre held a Ladies' Tea, to spread a special message of self-love.
The function, at the Lakes Hotel, on May 9, featured Thea van der Nest, from the University of Johannesburg’s Economic and Financial Sciences faculty, who gave a talk on this topic.
The centre focuses on being a place of safety, where the survivors of traumatic events, including assault, carjacking, rape and domestic violence, are empowered.
A part of their work includes awareness campaigns in schools on the East Rand.
In his welcoming speech, vice-chairman of iThemba Carl Schultz said he dreams of the day that the centre can close due to the lack of need for it.
“The centre currently works with more than 400 victims a month,” he emphasised.
He said these campaigns are initiated to enjoy fellowship and create awareness.
Van der Nest’s talk covered a variety of aspects relating to self-love.
“When I was down and out, I came across self-love,” she said.
“Self-love is to accept yourself unconditionally and be free to enjoy your perfect self, without fear and doubt in yourself.”
She placed a special focus on learning how to focus on our inner selves and less on our outer appearance.
“When we stop seeing our limitations, we’ll stop seeing ourselves as God and see the true great person we are,” she added.
“We need to become spontaneous again; learn to laugh and let go.
“Those who can laugh at their own foolishness, have found the fountain of youth.
“Don’t be afraid of the journey, be afraid of missing out.”
She said women can create a new life by changing their own words and thoughts.
“Start today to claim back yourself by realising your value — there’s no end to your potential — treasure the precious pearl you are,” she advised.
“Take what is not working in your life and believe in the miracle of transformation.”
She said if you love yourself, others around you will automatically love you, too.
“Only you can do it for you; I’m asking you now; don’t die with your music still in you,” she concluded.
After the talk, tea and hors d’oeuvres, sponsored by the hotel, were enjoyed by the women present, outside on the deck.
