Smooth sailing at Kon Tiki
Homestead Dam saw a variety of approximately 50 rafts take to the water on Saturday, May 17, during South Africa's largest annual Scouting event, Kon Tiki.
At the event, held from May 16 to 18, Scout groups from around Gauteng, as well as one from Polokwane, gathered at Arrowe Park, in Alphen Park, for raft-building, Scout and Cub challenges.
The crews, who built their rafts on Friday, took to the water at noon on Saturday, and had to remain there for 24 hours, facing mobility challenges.
They also had to prepare a meal, for which they received extra marks if they met this year’s “Going Green” theme, by using solar cookers and eco-friendly ingredients.
Four Scout groups from Benoni entered this years Kon Tiki: 1st Benoni Sea Scouts, 4th Benoni Air Scouts, 6th Benoni Scouts and 9th Benoni Scouts.
The organisers thanked Benoni residents for the use of Homestead Dam and Arrowe Park over the Kon Tiki weekend, and a special mention was made of Ward 28’s Clr Mary Goby, who supports the event each year.
