An unusually high number of pedestrian vehicle accidents occurred in the Benoni area since Tuesday, last week.

In the space of three days, six accidents took place (one being in Boksburg) where pedestrians (and one cyclist) were injured or killed.

Three people died in as many accidents on the roads from Tuesday, to Thursday, last week.

On Tuesday, a pedestrian was fatally wounded in Atlasville, on the corner of Atlas and Finch roads.

The man was struck by a vehicle which tore him in two.

On Wednesday morning, an EMPD officer died on Kingsway Road, while he was on duty.

The officer was performing speed enforcement duties when a vehicle knocked him down.

On Wednesday evening, a man was killed when he was hit by a bakkie on the N12 west-bound.

In three other, separate accidents, three people were injured when they were struck by vehicles.

A woman was knocked down by a motorcycle on Bunyan Street, on Tuesday, last week.

The woman sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital by an ER24 medical helicopter.

Then, on Friday, a SAPS member was moderately injured when he was knocked down by a vehicle on O’Reilly Merry Street.

On the same day, a cyclist sustained moderate injuries when he was hit by a light motor vehicle on Snake Road.

ER24 JHB East spokesperson Glen Orritt said the number of fatal accidents in such a short space of time was unusual.

He warned pedestrians to adhere to the by-laws applicable to pedestrians.

Orritt said people must stick to designated walking areas, cross roads at pedestrian crossings and wear reflective clothing at night.

He added that motorists should not exceed the the speed limit, expect the unexpected and perform defensive driving.
