Celebrating with performing arts at Sibikwa
A collaboration of arts, culture and talent was seen at the Sibikwa Arts Centre on national Youth Day when the centre hosted its Saturday Arts Academy (SAA) Mid Year Concert.
In celebration of this day, learners from schools in Soweto and Tembisa were sponsored by Total South Africa to participate in workshops in the marimba, drumming, African song and dance, drama, visual arts and street dance art forms hosted by Sibikwa.
They were divided into six groups which rotated hourly, giving them the opportunity to experience each workshop.
The guests could then settle in and enjoy a diversity of entertainment that followed, performed by students from the centre.
The programme included drama, song and dance and percussion instrument performances.
Nyameka Makonya, head of corporate social investment at Total South Africa, said they wanted to give the learners the opportunity to, not only explore their own creative talents, but be inspired by Sibikwa’s performances as to what can be achieved through hard work.
“We are committed to provide economically disadvantaged learners with access to quality education, encourage a culture of learning through the creative arts and directing the energies of youth towards goal oriented activities,” said Makonya.
Sibikwa thanked the teachers and learners for their dedication in making the day a memorable one.
“We would like to thank the parents for trusting us with their children,” said Phyllis Klotz, artistic director.
“We appreciate the contribution of our funders in enabling us to make the SAA programme a reality,”
They also thanked Total South Africa for their supportive and financial contributions.
