The Benoni High School Grade 12 learner flew to Rome on June 11, at the invitation of the Ambassador of South Africa in Rome, Nomatemba Tambo.
The opportunity gave him a chance to not only meet various dignitaries, but to also speak about South Africa’s democracy.
“My speech focused on the past, present and future of South Africa’s democracy.
“The message of the speech focused on our role as young people in making things right, not only for us, but for future generations,” said Niall.
His speech also focused on how the youth should learn from the challenges faced by our country.
“I acknowledged that our country has made a number of strides; as young people we can see there are various challenges, but how are we going to solve them?”
Niall’s speech left a lasting impression with the members of the audience, some even asked for a copy.
He does recognise that an opportunity such as this, happens to only a few.
“I felt proud as I had an opportunity to have my say,” Niall added.
The 18-year-old fell in love with public speaking at a young age, due to his parents encouragement.
“My parents encouraged me, since I was seven years old, to do public speaking, partly as a way to give me confidence, and it changed my life immensely,” said Niall.
The other passion he hopes to pursue is singing.
“I love public speaking, but music is also my passion; I believe music is a powerful instrument for inspiring people,” he said.
The support from his parents, Kathryn and Henry Higgins, has been an important contribution and has kept him inspired and motivated.
“My parents have always supported me since day one,” he said.
“I’m very proud of him and he has achieved a lot more than I have achieved in a lifetime,” said Henry.
Niall’s advice for young, aspiring public speakers, is to constantly remember who they are.
“Be yourself, do what you love, inspire people and follow your dreams,” he concluded.
