Police recover perlemoen worth millions in Rynfield

Perlemoen (abalone) worth an estimated R2-million was found in a house in Rynfield, on Monday evening.

Benoni cluster police spokesman Lieut Nomsa Sikele said that police were responding to reports of a terrible smell at a house in Simon Street, when they made the discovery.

Previously spokesperson Capt Alfred Nakana said the police were responding to the death of a man at the same house.

Upon arriving at the house the officers decided to search the premises.

“They found cooked perlemoen in a pot and, upon searching the house further, they discover more bags containing perlemoen,” said Nakana.

Police said four men, who are in the country illegally, were arrested on the spot for possession and charged with contravention of the National Environmental Management Act.

They are expected to appear soon in the Benoni Magistrates Court.
