‘Inconsistent’ mail delivery expected to continue

Backlog of 1.3-million items blamed

Benoni residents can expect a three-week period of ”inconsistent” mail delivery from the SA Post Office.

This is despite the Post Office assuring people, on June 26, that the delay would be resolved by July 4.

At that time, Post Office communications officer Johan Kruger said: ”Mail delivery in sections of the East Rand has been erratic for the past two weeks, as a result of employees who attended work irregularly”.

He dispelled talk of a strike in the Post Office.

Post Office head of mail business Janras Kotsi said, on Friday, that the mail delivery delay on the East Rand is due to a backlog of 1.3-million items.

”The cause of this backlog is the labour shortage stemming from the SA Post Office’s parting of ways with a number of mail delivery employees posted in this area, because of their failure to adhere to company policies,” he explained.

”While mail delivery operations in this area (East Rand, as of Tuesday, July 7) have been normalised, customers should still expect some delays as a result of the backlog and the skeleton mail delivery staff at our disposal.”

This will come as little comfort for Benonians, with many expressing their dissatisfaction on the Benoni City Times Facebook page last week.

”No post received in Rynfield,” said Beaulieu Mare.

”We are awaiting a donation of beanies to distribute to the needy and it’s a crying shame that they are stuck in the postal system, instead of being with those who need them in this cold weather.”

Henning Olivier said: ”Post! What’s that?

”Not in Northmead Extension Four.”

Dawn de Vries said: ”I have received nothing for five weeks.

”So annoying.”

Giles Darroch: ”Received a lot yesterday.”

Robyn Brown said: ”No post in the box at Farrarmere for four weeks now.’

”No invoices or anything for my company!”
