Residents fight to keep public park

Residents of Daveyton Extension Two are concerned that their public park is now being turned into a place to sell alcohol.

The park is situated in Sigalo Street, Daveyton, and residents said that, a few years ago, someone fenced off the area and started construction of what they believe to be a liquor outlet.

They claimed that the construction stopped after they fought against it, but that work in the area has resumed recently.

The residents are concerned that the value of their properties will depreciate as soon as the outlet starts operating, as there will be noise and lots of traffic.

The Ekurhuleni Metro said it is aware of the construction that is taking place, but did not respond to our questions about whether or not the area has been rezoned and if there was ever any consultation with owners of nearby properties.

Metro spokesperson Lebogang Ramashala said: “Residents are urged to be patient, as the matter is receiving attention from the metro.”
