Numsa strike comes to an end

The National Union of Metalworkers agreed to end their four-week strike in the metal sector on Monday.

The union accepted a 10 per cent annual salary increase fixed for three years, for its lowest-paid workers.

Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim said the settlement offer was unanimously accepted by members in all the nine provinces and workers are expected to start reporting for work today (Tuesday, July 29).

However, one of the employers’ associations, the National Employers Association of South Africa (Neasa), which represents about 3 000 employers in the metals sector, said they are not happy with the deal as the wage increase is excessive.

Neasa said it will lock out the striking workers from today.
