Pipe bands and dancers descend on Benoni High

The South African Pipe Band and Highland Dancing Championships was held at Benoni High School at the weekend.

Hundreds of people turned up to watch 24 competing bands and over 100 Highland dancers.

The championships have been held at Benoni High School for the past 12 years.

Here are the results for the pipe band and Highland dancing championships held at Benoni High School on July 26:

Overall pipe band winners per section

Grade Two – First Benoni MacTalla

Grade Three – First Sandton Scottish

Grade Four – First Knysna and Districts

Juvenile – First Pretoria Boys Juvenile

Novice Juvenile – First Jeppe CBC Boksburg

Open Drum Major – First Deon Bester

Juvenile Drum Major – First Dominique Kerkhove

Benoni results

Benoni MacTalla – Grade Two SA Champs (includes past and present pupils)

Both Benoni School Bands (Benoni Novice Juvenile and Benoni Juvenile) are SA Champs in the bass and tenor drumming sections

Deon Bester of Benoni MacTalla (ex BHS pupil) – SA Champs Drum Major

Melis Mels (BHS pupil) – runner-up in Junior Drum Major champs

Highland dancing results:

SA Championship seven to 15 years

1. Alicia Walters from the Shaw-Butler Studio (Gauteng) – Donald McKintosh Trophy

2. Robyn Searle (Western Cape) runner-up – Clarendon Trophy

3. Yael Raburn (Gauteng) third – Bev Drennan-Leahy Trophy

SA Championships 16 to 18 years

1. Shannon Anderson from the Robinson Studio (Gauteng) – Shendl Russell Trophy

2. Kate Ellis runner-up – Ashleigh Nesbitt Trophy

3. Megan Moore (Gauteng) third – Rafferty Trophy

S A Championships – 19 years and over

1. Caitlin Boyes from the Robinson Studio (Gauteng) – Webster Cup

2. Conrad Nusser (Western Cape) runner-up – Schlesinger Trophy

3. Taryn Ballentine (Western Cape) third – Rob Elin Trophy.
