Mail delivery delay end in sight

The South African Post Office's mail delivery on the East Rand will be normalised by August 2.

Post Office communications officer Johan Kruger said, on Friday, that mail delivery was affected on the East Rand due to workers who were dissatisfied with the shifts they were working.

These workers have now been given different shifts and moved out of the East Rand.

On July 14, Post Office head of mail business Janras Kotsi said that the mail delivery delays on the East Rand were due to a backlog of 1.3-million items.

Not receiving a statement does not exempt you from payment

Meanwhile, the City Times received a letter from a reader stating that Ekurhuleni cut her electricity supply.

”Now this year’s postal strike has come, we have not received an account; we paid the same amount that we paid last month again, to be safe,” said the letter sent by Joline Wright.

”Please note that we paid over two thirds of the outstanding amount and that, to my shock, on the exact day that the final warning was delivered to my house, our electricity had already been cut.”

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said that, in the event of a postal strike, people should pay ”similar amounts” to the previous month’s statements.

”The delayed delivery of printed municipal account statements is not reason enough for customers not to pay their accounts, or to pay them late,” said Gadebe.

”The on-going interruption of postal services has seen a number of frustrated customers, who due to not receiving their statements on time, have either skipped payment or paid late, thus incurring arrears on their accounts.”

Gadebe said people can have their summary statements SMSed to them, view and pay online at www.e-siyakhokha.co.za, or predate payments.
