Lions still offering support to deaf girl
Friends and loved ones of Payton Peters (2) are confident that the young girl's operation to have a cochlear implant fitted was a success.
Payton underwent an implant on one of her ears on July 22.
The toddler’s parents received their single biggest financial donation toward the operation from the Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club, on June 28.
The club donated R20 000 for the procedure and have been checking up on the little girl’s progress.
”The Lions have been amazing,” said Payton’s mother, Michelle van Zyl, a Linksfield resident.
”They share all our posts on their Facebook page with regard to how Payton is doing, the funds we still need to raise and the fund-raisers we have coming up.
”They also constantly contact us to see how Payton is doing.
”They really are an incredible group of people.”
The first device, fitted on July 22, will be turned on in just over two weeks time and then sound will slowly be introduced.
Payton’s ear will then be trained to recognise sound.
Once the doctors are happy, and the first ear recognises sounds, they will fit the second ear with a sound processor and then train that ear to recognise sounds.
The family now have to raise the funds for the external sound processors and the second implant.
Members of the Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club will show support in early August, by attending a fund-raiser for Payton at the Cresta Barnyard.
