Searches and patrols were prompted by an increase in notorious and irresponsible driving in certain areas within Daveyton.
“From 4.30pm until 6.30pm, officers strategically patrolled the Daveyton Precinct and, from 11pm, set up roadside checks on Sibiya, Segodi, Mathewson and Mthimunye streets,” said Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson.
The operation yielded 17 arrests for suspected drinking and driving, sending a clear warning to offenders.
“All the areas identified as problematic and responsible for exposing innocent road-users to danger will be attended to and no mercy will be shown to offenders,” said Kgasago.
The arrested drivers were booked into the Daveyton Police Station and were expected to appear in the Daveyton Magistrates Court, to face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
