Glynnwood’s little joy turns 21

The baby who made headlines for being the first to be born in the The Glynnwood Hospital's new maternity wing, is now 21 years old.

Terry Louise Strydom turned 21 on July 23.

Her birth at the Glynnwood Hospital, now Life The Glynnwood Hospital, made headlines in the hospital’s magazine and the Benoni City Times of August 6, 1993.

Renette Strydom, Terry’s mother, said the hospital staff made a fuss over her daughter’s birth in the new maternity wing.

The new section included a 30-bed maternity wing with a neonatal intensive care unit.

Renette said the matron wheeled her into the new ward late on the evening of July 22.

”I did not know I would be the first to give birth there,” said Renette.

”It was all a surprise.”

”We chose you and you are going in first,” the matron told the expecting mother.

After the birth, hospital staff presented Renette with a silver money box, which the family still has.

The mother was invited to a cocktail party at the hospital four days after her daughter’s birth.

Terry attended school at Tom Newby and Willowmoore High School and lives in Brakpan.

She works as a telemarketer and au pair.
