This follows the suspension of cluster head Brig Vuyokazi Ndebele, relating to irregularities surrounding the police recruitment policy.
Ndebele is facing fraud charges and the SAPS’s internal disciplinary hearing.
Gauteng police spokesman Brig Neville Malila said that Subbiah’s appointment is effective from August 14, the day Ndebele was suspended.
Malila said they won’t be making a permanent appointment to the post any time soon.
“We will have an acting incumbent until the end of both the criminal trial and the disciplinary hearing,” he explained.
According to Malila, the reason the post won’t be advertised is that Ndebele is innocent until proven guilty.
Subbiah said he would apply the same principles of policing he applied while heading the Benoni SAPS.
“The only thing to change is that the amount of effort will be a lot more,” he said, adding that the focus will be on drugs, taking on the big fish and on illegal mining and the by-laws.
