Toughing it out in Canada
Benoni resident Casper “Cassie” Moodie (26) went to Canada from Tuesday, August 26, to September 1, for the Triathlon World Championships, where he placed 14th of 78 athletes from 73 different countries.
He raced the standard distance, consisting of a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run, in the age group of 25 to 29 years.
He trains seven days a week and three times a day to get to where he currently is.
“I also had to lose 35kg,” he said.
Moodie mostly trains at the High Performance Centre, in Pretoria, under the guidance of Lindsey Parry.
He started triathlon racing four years ago, when he was challenged by a friend.
He realised that he really enjoyed the sport and wanted to continue it on a permanent basis.
The triathlete was born and raised in Springs and lived here for 25 years before moving to Benoni.
Three weeks before leaving for Canada, Moodie travelled to France, where he participated in the professional category in the 51-50 Marseille Triathlon and placed 12th out of 19 of some of the world’s best professional athletes.
He will also attend a tri-camp, in Namibia, on October 26, and the 51-50 African Championship, in Germiston, on November 2.
