More reports of dog poisonings

More people have come forward with news of their dogs being poisoned this week.

This takes the known number of dogs that have been poisoned since Monday from 13 to 17, and the number of deaths from six to seven.

The latest report came from a business on Birch Road (Petit) where two rottweilers were poisoned on Monday.

Both canines survived.

Another property on Leopard Road, was the scene of two poisonings (one of which was fatal).

The City Times reported this morning of this week’s poisonings in the agricultural areas of Benoni.

Report poisonings

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz asked the public to report dog poisonings to the police.

She said the police station has a dog poisoning register in the charge office which is used to heighten patrols in the affected areas.

Maritz said poisonings in the Crystal Park SAPS tend to precede house breakings, theft of motor vehicles and motor cycles.

She said 12 dog poisoning cases were reported to the Crystal Park Police Station in the past two months (excluding the dogs that were poisoned the past two nights).

Maritz said people must do the following to lower the risk of poisoning

  •  Get your animals to a vet as soon as possible.
  •  Ensure that there is no trace of poison left behind, to prevent other dogs from ingesting the poison.
  •  The yard must be cleaned thoroughly after a poisoning.
  •  It is smart to do routine checks where your dog is kept in order to spot any poisoned food that may be present.
  •  Teach your dog not to accept any food or treats from strangers.
