Here are Benoni’s smash-and-grab hotspots

Smash-and-grab hotspots in the Benoni SAPS precinct:

•  Snake Road on and off-ramps.
•  Main Reef and Snake roads.
•  Bunyan Street on and off-ramps.
•  Range View Road and Dewalt Hattingh Road.

Tips to reduce chances of falling victim to smash-and-grab:

•  Always be vigilant when driving around the above-mentioned areas and also try not to put valuable items in sight, where they are easily accessible to criminals.
•  Always lock your vehicle doors and keep your windows closed.
•  Park your vehicle in places that are well lit.
•  Avoid stopping at remote places.

The Benoni SAPS said hijackings can happen anywhere.

Follow these tips to reduce chances of being hijacked:

•  Do not resist, talk back or be aggressive towards the perpetrator/s.
•  Cooperate with the perpetrator/s and give them what they want. Your valuables are not worth your life.
•  Never look directly at the perpetrator.
•  Keep your hands visible at all times and if you have to move, do so slowly.
•  If you are thinking of opening the vehicle door, explain to the perpetrator/s that you are doing so.
•  Inform them that they can take whatever they want, but to please leave you unharmed.
•  If you can, try to memorise whatever you can, such as their clothing, the car they are driving and registration number, but bare in mind that they do not want you to look directly at them.
