Fleeing thief breaks a leg

An alleged car thief was arrested after he broke his leg while running away from the police, on September 27.

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesman Capt Mack Mngomezulu said the man was arrested in Etwatwa, following a tip-off regarding a suspicious-looking vehicle that was parked at one of the houses.

“When making enquiries police, discovered that the vehicle had been stolen in Benoni,” said Mngomezulu.

Police told the owner of the house to call the person who had parked the vehicle there, as they said he was not at the house at the time.

“When he arrived the police tried to arrest him, but he fled and the police gave chase,” said Mngomezulu.

The police finally caught him when he broke his leg while trying to jump over a wall in the neighbourhood.

He was arrested and was taken to hospital under police guard.

n In another incident, the police are looking for three suspects who robbed and killed a tavern owner in Etwatwa East, in the early hours of August 28.

The robbers used his car to get away, but it overturned and was found near the Phumlani Cemetery.

Police successes for the weekend operations are as follows:

n Actonville: 19 arrests, ranging from illegal immigrants and drunkenness to armed robbery.

n Benoni: 42 arrests, ranging from theft, assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of drugs, to fraud, drunken driving and public drinking.

n Crystal Park: seven arrests for being in the country illegally.

n Daveyton: 16 arrests, ranging from shoplifting and assault, to theft and robbery.

n Etwatwa: 13 arrests, ranging from theft, robbery an d assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm, to drunkenness.

n Putfontein: 11 arrests for drunken driving.
