Police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the man opened the case with the Benoni police, claiming he was hijacked in Springs, but officers working on the case realised that something about it was not making sense.
The man, who lives in Kingsway, was contacted to come to the police station to help officers iron out some of the details.
“He came to the police station and reported to the charge officer, but soon left without seeing the officers who wanted him to accompany them to the scene of crime,” said Sekele.
The officers decided to drive to the man’s home where, to their surprise, they found him and the car he said had been hijacked.
The man told the police that he went absent without leave from work.
When he lied to his employer about being hijacked, he was told to produce the case number, as proof. That’s when he decided to open a case.
Sekele said he was arrested and charged with perjury and will appear soon in the Benoni Magistrates Court.
