According to the police, 43-year-old Zafrulla Bham was shot dead while responding to an alarm activation at his store.
Another businessman, Rama Maistry, of Cranbourne Avenue Panel-beaters, who suffered an attack, feels businesses should be warned of such dangers.
“Our business was robbed in the same manner and, fortunately, nobody responded to the alarm,” said Maistry.
He said thieves ripped off the roof of his business to gain access into the building.
“They then destroyed surveillance cameras, damaged doors and stole computers and a 300kg safe,” said Maistry, adding that businesses, especially in the CBD, are struggling.
“We are being taken for granted and we are not getting mileage from the government as far as protection is concerned,” he added.
His sentiments were echoed by Benoni Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) president Muhammad Essop, who said the chamber is concerned that attacks on businesses are on the rise.
He explained that, prior to Bham’s murder, “four businesses, including the Spar in Ampthill Avenue, were robbed in one day”.
Essop added that the chamber is planning a meeting with the police on October 15, to raise awareness of safety concerns and interests with regard to business.
He invites all businesses to attend the meeting for a one on one with the local top cops.
In the meantime Essop advised those responding to suspicious incidents at their businesses to seek the company of security companies or the police.
The meeting will be held in the Benoni Council Chambers, at the intersection of Tom Jones and Elston Avenue, from 6.30pm.
Those willing to attend should contact Essop on 082 959 2131.
Essop also sent condolences to the Bham family on behalf of the chamber.
“I would also like to praise the manner in which the scene was handled by the Benoni CPF and the police,” he said.
