Watch out for illegal road signs

Northmead resident Judge O'Dwyer was stopped at what seems to be an illegal "no entry sign on Great North Road, on September 12.

According to the EMPD officer who stopped him, he was driving illegally on the road and was subsequently told to turn back.

The EMPD has admitted that the sign does not seem legal.

If you are issued with a traffic fine for disobeying what seems to be an illegal road sign, you can dispute the charge.

“You can visit a prosecutor in the Benoni Metro Police Municipal Court before the date of trial that appears on the traffic fine, to state your case, or you can wait for the date of the trial and contest the fine in court,” said Kobeli Mokheseng, EMPD media liaison officer.

He added that where a “no entry” sign is placed legally, it will be on a one-way road and it will be backed-up by a road marking.
