Action taken to improve conditions of Bunny Park animals

Despite gratitude shown by City Times readers for the completion of this year's renovations implemented at the Bunny Park, concerns about the animals' wellness were raised.

Among others, a main concern raised was the illness affecting some of the bunnies.

Inspector at the Benoni SPCA Renee Rossolimos said she does regular check-ups on the animals, and will do so again this coming weekend.

She said canker and mange are the diseases that have spread among the bunnies and the SPCA will introduce strategies to remove the illnesses.

Canker is a fungal disease that affects the ears and mouth of animals, while mange is a skin disease, which Rossolimos said is a result of incorrect feeding that weakens their immune systems.

She said the illness will not be removed completely, due to it being conveyed through the sand.

Caretaker at the Bunny Park Gideon Strydom supported Rossolimos, saying that they are in the process of acting on the illness affecting the bunnies.

He added that the animals are in a very good condition in general.

The park is also in the process of receiving professional consultation to restore the condition of the dam, within the coming year’s budget.
