WARNING: smash-and-grabs on the rise again

With the festive season fast approaching, thieves and robbers are now using every opportunity to strike.

The Benoni SAPS is, therefore, warning motorists about the increasing number of smash-and-grabs in the area.

Lieut Nomsa Sekele reported that smash-and-grabs are starting again in several areas around the city.

“A number of cases have been reported and we would like to warn the community to be aware when driving around the intersections and in dark places,” she said.

“We are asking motorists to be vigilant at any intersection.

“Our members do patrol the intersections, but when they leave the criminals return and strike again. ”

Sekele added that sometimes smash-and-grabs occur because of negligence, as people tend to leave their valuables in sight and such negligence lures criminals.

She urged motorists to be careful when giving money or food to beggars and entertainers on the street corners.

She added that the police are doing everything in their power to ensure safety and asked that all crimes be reported immediately.

The following areas are high smash-and-grab areas:

  •  Morehill, N12 Snake Road on and off-ramp.
  •  Tom Jones Street and Snake Road intersection.
  •  Bunyan on and off-ramp.
  •  Rangeview Road and Dewalt Hatting intersection.
  •  Lancaster Road, close to Sasol Garage.
  •  Atlas Road.
