EMPD involved in shoot-out during attempted hijacking

EMPD Freeway Unit members were involved in a shoot-out during a suspected truck hijacking, on the N12, on Thursday, November 13.

“While patrolling, the members noticed a stationary truck near the Daveyton N12 turn-off and decided to investigate; stopped in front of the truck was a VW Polo sedan, with five occupants,” said Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson.

As officers approached the vehicle, the Polo drove off, heading towards Etwatwa.

The officers followed the vehicle and the occupants then shot at them.

“In the ensuing heavy exchange of gunfire the perpetrators abandoned their vehicle and disappeared into the night,” said Kgasago.

In the VW Polo, the officers found the driver of the truck, who was unharmed.”

The targeted truck was a carrying a cargo of car batteries.

The Polo, which was later identified as stolen, was booked into the SAPS Van Ryn Deep Pound.

A case of attempted hijacking was opened at the Etwatwa Police Station.
