Ever wondered where the Benoni Orchestra went to?
Although the Benoni Orchestra was disbanded over 15 years ago, two of its former members are still breathing life into their instruments, as members of Guys and Dolls.
The 10-person Guys and Dolls band performed at the St John’s Congregational Church on Saturday, November 22.
Neil Clough, who plays the tenor saxophone, is the only original member of the Benoni Orchestra, which was formed in 1965.
He started playing in the ERPM Orchestra at the age of 18.
The sax player was the third ever conductor of the Benoni Orchestra and is a member of the Johannesburg-based Swing Tones orchestra.
Clough said the Benoni Orchestra, which is the father of the Guys and Dolls band, experienced dwindling numbers some 15 years ago, due to the death of some members’ deaths and the immigration of others.
About a year after the orchestra was dissolved, some members reinvented themselves, changed their name to Men in Black and introduced a drummer, a vocalist and bass guitarist.
Men in Black changed their name to the current Guys and Dolls, with the introduction of Sarika Botha (second trumpeter) and vocalist Yolande Kindon.
The band members now play their beloved swing music at events in Benoni and other parts of the East Rand.
Clough said people who would like to join Guys and Dolls should contact former Benoni Orchestra member John Chapman on 083 378 3477.
