Escalating housebreakings could be due to negligence — SAPS

In the past few weeks, following a crime analysis conducted by the station, the Benoni SAPS have noticed that housebreakings in the city are starting to rise again.

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said they have realised that some of the crimes reported were due to negligence on the part of the community.

“In some cases that were reported the same method was used by suspects, for example, breaking the window and grabbing small, valuable items that are easily accessible, such as ipads, laptops, cameras, phones and external hard drives,” said Sekele.

She added that criminals are targeting houses where valuables are noticeable through open curtains, late at night.

Many people will soon be on vacation, leaving their homes unattended and Sekele urged them to inform trusted family members or friends of the time they will be away and to request regular visits to their houses.

“If possible upgrade your security measures,” she added.

“As the Benoni SAPS, we appeal to the community to be alert and work with us in order avoid these crimes from happening.”

Any suspicious activity noticed must be reported to the police.
