Suspects arrested for false hijacking claim

Two suspects were arrested for defeating the ends of justice after they opened a false hijacking claim.

The men, aged 36 and 37, were arrested by WO Thomas Matsane, on January 20.

According to Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, the suspect alleged that on Saturday, January 17, he was approached by three unknown men.

“He said they robbed him of his vehicle in Daveyton, and dumped him in Jet Park.

“He then called his friend to pick him up and take him to the police station,” said Sekele.

A case of hijacking was opened which stated that the scene of the crime was in Benoni.

Further investigations revealed that for the purpose of claiming insurance, the suspect instructed his friend to open the false case under his name, as his friend is a registered driver.

“He knew that the insurance company would not pay out if the said victim of the hijacking reported the case,” said Sekele.

The suspects appeared in the Benoni Magistrate Court on Wednesday, January 21.

The case was placed on the roll and postponed till further notice.

“Benoni SAPS urges members of the public not to open false cases as it is a crime, and they will be arrested,” said Sekele.
