Criminals strike at annual marathon

Although the Johnson Crane Marathon was considered a great success in terms of attendance of runners and spectators, there was an incident that marred proceedings.

One man was arrested on Sunday, January 25, for allegedly selling stolen race numbers and race T-shirts at the annual race (although more men are suspected to be involved).

The man was spotted by a volunteer.

Mandla Radebe, Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) general manager, said the provincial body will conduct an internal investigation, in concurrence with the police investigation, as to how the men obtained the race numbers and shirts.

It is believed that the men have been operating at numerous running events around the province since last year.

Const Zunickha Essakjee, communications officer for the Benoni SAPS, confirmed that just one arrest had been made and that a case of theft had been opened at the station.
