15 to 20 robbers make off with goods valued at R2.5-m

Electrical appliances and groceries worth an estimated R2.5-million were stolen from a vacant plot, in Brentwood Park, on January 27.

Const Zunickha Essakjee, Benoni Police Station’s communication officer, said approximately 15 to 20 armed robbers arrived at the Van Wyk Road property in a white bakkie and truck horse, at around 8pm.

The robbers entered the property, which is used as a truck stop, and tied up 10 or 12 truckers and crew, who were preparing food.

“They ordered the truckers to give them what they had and tied them up with shoe laces,” said Essakjee.

“Two of the intruders remained with the workers in a room.”

The robbers untied one of the victims, who was forced to show them the location of the electrical appliances.

Essakjee said the perpetrators hooked one of the trailers to the horse with which they arrived on the property and drove off.

They returned later without the trailer and connected another one, making off with the groceries and appliances.

The victims were also robbed of their cell phones and cash.

A case of business robbery has been opened at the Benoni Police Station and no one has yet been arrested in connection with the crime.
