Unkempt veld causes uproar

Actonville residents are up in arms over uncut grass growing in an open veld on the corner of Dajee and Lowton streets.

The veld, which is privately owned, has remained unkempt for months, and residents fear that it is the cause of a high number of snakes and rats in the area.

Haseena Ismail, DA PR councillor, said many people are living uncomfortably because of the issue.

“Neighbours at the front, back and on the side, have to keep their windows and doors closed in hot weather and this is not fair,” said Ismail.

She says children can not play outside because of the large rats that roam around.

“When residents approach the owner he shouts at them,” said Ismail.

Ward 29 councillor Imtiaz Loonat said that he will report the matter to the Department of Health.

“Before the department cleans the area they will send a notice to the owner of the property.

“If he does not get the grass cut, they will clean the area and serve him the bill,” said Loonat.
