Senior citizens enjoy their day
Pensioners in Actonville were the centre of attention on Sunday, March 8.
The Community Centre on Khan Crescent was home to an annual event in which ward councillors and other community members showed their respect to the elders of Actonville, with music, entertainment, refreshments and plenty of seating to help everyone feel at ease.
Two nurses from the Sunshine Hospital performed free blood tests for the senior citizens, as healthcare for pensioners is highly regarded by the organisers.
The event was organised and funded by DA Ward 29 PR councillor Haseena Ismail who, with her team, coordinated everything.
Michele Clarke, DA MPL and spokesperson for Community Safety in Gauteng, attended the event, commending Ismail on a job well done.
Ismail said the clinics available to pensioners are sometimes so busy that they have to wait for longer than they can bear before receiving any attention or medication.
“We talked to the community members who arrived here today, about their concerns and their issues, and will see where we can assist them, in terms of service delivery, and just keep them informed about what is happening and the role we play,” said Clarke.
“The function is also to spoil people a bit, because senior citizens are so often forgotten in life and I just feel that government must really start making provision for them.
“If you look all over the world, at the infrastructure which is in place for senior citizens in terms of healthcare and pensions, this country is really lagging behind hugely compared to world standards.”
More than 80 residents enjoyed the snacks, fruit, soft drinks and dancers who provided entertainment.
