Bogus bomb scare in Benoni CBD

No explosives were discovered at the two Absa branches which received bomb scares on Monday morning (March 23).

Benoni SAPS acting cluster commander Brig Poobalan Subbiah said the bomb squad, Benoni SAPS and the Gauteng K9 unit responded to the two Absa branches, on Cranbourne Avenue.

A bomb threat was first made to a direct line at the branch on the corner of Tom Jones Street and Cranbourne Avenue.

“Someone called and said the bank is going to explode in two minutes,” said Sekele.

“A person called (the bank) again and said it’s still going to happen.”

The bank was evacuated.

Police arrived on scene and cordoned off the section of Cranbourne Avenue, off Tom Jones Street.

A short while later, the Absa branch closest to the Benoni Plaza received a similar call.

Subbiah said no explosives were found.

He said the banks will give police a record of their outgoing and incoming phone calls.

No arrests had been made at the time of going to print on Tuesday morning.

A case of a bomb threat will be opened at the Benoni Police Station.
