Department to commence refurbishment at Verkenner in September

The state of the infrastructure at Verkenner Primary School will be improved from September, when the Gauteng Department of Education anticipates it will commence its refurbishment project at the school.

“The department is aware of the state of infrastructure at Verkenner Primary; consultants have been appointed to determine and provide a conditional assessment, including the cost estimation for the project,” explained deparmental spokesperson, Phumla Sekhonyane.

The poor conditions at the school were highlighted after DA MPL Michele Clarke’s recent oversight visit to the school.

“I was disappointed to see the shocking infrastructure conditions that both learners and teachers have had to endure,” she said.

”The disastrous state of wear and tear has left the school with caved in ceilings, damaged learning material, a ruined foundation and faulty electrical appliances — all due to water damage,” said Clarke. These poor conditions have caused a very hazardous learning environment for students as well as working environment for teachers,” said Clarke.

According to her, the staff has made efforts to improve the school where possible, however it is only minimal compared to the maintenance work that is needed.

The department’s Sekhonyane said the project is currently at the planning stages with the professional team working on the preparation for the commencement of the work.

“The work will comprise the rehabilitation and refurbishment of all facilities at the school,” added Sekhonyane.
