He appeared in Regional Court One, at the Benoni Magistrates Court, before Magistrate Ian Cox.
He was arrested in November, last year, for a shooting which claimed the lives of four Nigerian men, Obiakor Chukwu (40), Kayoyo Okafor (38), Chika Nweke (35) and Amechi Amafoly (35), and left one survivor, Justice Ozoekwe (37).
“Police came across a silver grey VW Golf 5 on July 4, 2013, at the corner of Elston Avenue and Bunyan Street,” said Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson.
“Inside the vehicle officers found two bodies which had sustained gunshot wounds and, upon further inspection, they discovered another injured man at the side of the road, next to the vehicle; he was taken to hospital but died from his injuries,” said Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson.
According to Sekele, further investigations revealed that there was another victim, who was earlier transported to hospital and recovered over time.
“The investigating officer, W/O Peter Mbonani, had the mammoth task of ascertaining who the killer was; he worked tirelessly following up on information, which led to the arrest of Arends,” she added.
