Benoni Pioneers hold AGM
The Benoni Pioneers Association held its annual general meeting (AGM) on May 13.
The meeting was held at Lions Community Centre, Benoni Old People’s Home, in the Benoni CBD.
Several members were elected as part of the association’s executive commitee, including Ken Brown, Elsie Francis, Winnie Job, Anne Begg and Jeanette Christie.
Ken Brown, former mayor of Benoni, gave a speech commending the current members of the association for their achievements, honouring important contributors to Benoni and explaining his vision for Benoni.
“There are many more pioneers in Benoni, we need to find them and enrol them to share their thoughts and achievements,” said Brown.
“At the age of only 20, she (Natalee Adendorff) pioneered a facility for kiddies, thereby building a future Benoni and South Africa.”
The club usually has three meetings a year, which often feature guest speakers.
The association currently has 30 members, lead by a former mayor of the city and the group’s president, Sam Grolman, and lady president Shirley du Plessis.
The association was founded by Morrie Nestadt in 1934 and is one of Benoni’s oldest associations.
As a condition to join the association, the applicant must have been a resident of Benoni for a minimum of 30 years.
Anyone who would like to join may contact the association’s secretary and vice lady president, Brenda McDonald, on 073 423 3280.
