Old Bens take another win
Old Bens Football Club’s first XI achieved another morale-boosting win in the ELFA Super League, on Saturday, May 16.
After a 2-0 home win the week before, Bens kept up that winning feeling with a deserving 3-2 win in Alberton.
In the first half, it was Old Bens who dominated from the start, courtesy of some good two-touch football.
The away side opened the scoring from a well placed corner kick that found the head of striker Bilal Mohammed.
Just before the halftime break a defensive error saw Alberton break away and get the equaliser.
In the second stanza, Bens again controlled possession and, in the 60th minute, right fullback Eduardo Mendes received the ball on the halfway line and, with excellent vision, beat the Alberton goalkeeper, who was on the edge of his penalty box, with an audacious shot.
Following the goal, the hosts reverted to long ball tactics, which forced Bens coach Raymond Cloete to alter his formation.
This paid off well when Bens bagged their third goal of the match, through that man Mohammed, who pounced on a rebound off the Alberton gloveman.
With 10 minutes to go, Bens took their foot off the accelerator and allowed their opposition in for their second goal.
The game ended 3-2.
Cloete said he was thrilled with the away victory and the effort his team put in.
The three points won on Saturday keep Bens at mid-table in the Super League.
On Saturday, May 23, they will face Bedfordview Country Club at Currin Park.
