Gauteng SAPS spokesperson, Lieut Col Lungelo Dlamini said, the police officer and another member received information on drugs during an operation at an informal settlement in KwaThema.
“On arrival at a shack, they confronted four men who refused to allow them to search their premises,” said Dlamini.
“One of the men produced a firearm and a shootout between them ensued.”
A man was fatally shot and a policeman was wounded.
An illegal firearm and five rounds of ammunition were seized from the deceased.
The police officer was taken to a hospital in Benoni.
He is in a serious but stable condition after he was shot in his lower back.
