Police arrest two, recover AK47 and ammunition

Police believe they have made a breakthrough after seizing weapons and ammunition and arresting two persons who they believe are involved in housebreakings in Putfontein.

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson WO Ramothakhi Maqabe said police received a tip-off on July 7 of a stolen car at a premises in Hillcrest, Putfontein.

“Upon arrival, SAPS and Metro police found two suspects,” said Maqabe.

“One tried to run away and and was later caught.”

The suspects, a woman aged 24 and a man aged 34, were arrested.

One of the suspects took police to a residential property in Mayfield, near Daveyton where they discovered guns.

Maqabe said police recovered an AK47 with 43 rounds of live ammunition, one 9mm pistol with four rounds of live ammunition, four fake registration plates, a pair of gloves, a jamming device with a battery charger and a silver BMW.

Police are trying to establish whether the car is stolen and whether it is the car police suspect has been used in committing housebreakings in Putfontein.

The Putfontein SAPS questioned a third suspect last night, a woman, who they believe could be an accomplice of the two people who were arrested.

The suspects are being detained at the Putfontein Police Station.

They will be charged with illegal possession of an unlicenced firearm, ammunition and suspected stolen property.
