Currently in its 17th year, Apricot Tree Stimulation Centre for differently abled children and young adults has strived to create an environment where individuals can grow and thrive.

Since 2022, the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora has journeyed with the centre, assisting in mammoth rejuvenation projects or delivering goods to further aid its growth.

On August 18, Rotary District Governor Grace van Zyl, District Governor Rotary Anns Sylvia Knoop and members of the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora again visited the Northmead-based centre bringing with them a bounty of gifts, including an industrial grade cake mixer, fridge, speaker, mini exercise bike and projector.

Starting at the young adult centre, principal Abby-Jade Reason explained that as part of their skills development programme, young adult learners participate in daily baking and cooking activities, based upon their unique abilities.

“From biscuits to muffins and ‘mom’s-night-off’ precooked meals, our adults gain valuable skills training which help them feel accomplished and part of their community,” she said.

“These skills may not lead to employment outside of the centre, however the impact of accomplishing a certain task, which contributes to the overall production of a tray of cookies, has a lasting effect on their confidence and social skills.

“Our learners take great pride in everything they do and implements such as mixers and other equipment contribute greatly to their inclusion into the community.”

Of the projector, which has been installed in the stimulation centre hall, Reason said that it is used daily as part of the learners’ regulation activities.

“The images and sounds help our children with movement, expression while filling the centre with joyous sounds,” she said.

Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora president Charles van Rooyen said that Apricot Tree, its invaluable work and the individuals who benefit from its care, is close to the club’s heart.

“We are grateful to be able to assist and in turn make a positive impact in the lives of these children,” he said.

“Through our contributions I hope that they know that we see them, we value them and we care deeply about their growth.”
