Inspiring educator speaks to Rotarians

On July 15, the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora hosted Corey Johnson, executive director of Imagine Scholar, as guest speaker.

Johnson and two of his former students, Thenjiwe Ndimande and Portia Ngwenya, joined the Rotarians for breakfast.

Imagine Scholar is a four-year, after-school mentorship programme for talented, disadvantaged youth in the Nkomazi region of South Africa.

Johnson grew up and studied law in the US, but decided his passion was elsewhere before coming to Africa to educate exceptional young students.

His programme focuses strongly on teaching critical thinking and social entrepreneurship.

At the breakfast, a Service Award was handed to Jeni Paillard, who was absent at the club’s recent induction ceremony.

Paillard had visited a Rotary club in the UK, the banner of which she handed over to Grace van Zyl (Aurora president) at the breakfast.
