Locals schools to benefit from cash injection

The Department of Education has set aside R9-million to build new sanitation facilities in 50 schools, identified as having the worst ablution facilities in the province.

Earlier this year, Equal Education released a report into the state of sanitation in Gauteng schools.

A team of professionals conducted quality assurance assessment on the 578 schools and drafted medium to long-term recommendations.

The assessment mainly makes recommendations relating to the adequacy of toilets at schools.

A total of 472 schools have been identified by the department and currently 200 have contractors on site.

In Benoni and Daveyton, six schools are currently included in the sanitation programme.

They are: Ephes Mamkeli Secondary School, William Hills Secondary School, Mabuya Secondary School, Lesiba Secondary School, Unity Secondary School and Bhekimfundo Primary School.

The sanitation restructuring will be complete by the end of August.
